What is SEMANTIFI ?

SEMANTIFI is a technology solution for getting any information and envisioned to be as simple as web-search. SEMANTIFI enables users to directly explore any structured information by asking simple questions or keywords without having to always rely on data analysts. To achieve this goal, SEMANTIFI uses a semantic or meaning-based search engine to understand users’ requests and respond with highly relevant, accurate and consistent answers in seconds.

Currently SEMANTIFI can search several datasets including SEC Filings, Government Spending, Earmarks by Congress, Ratings and US Economic Data (FRED).

How do I ask a question?

As simple as 1-2-3:

  1. Ask simple questions or keywords
  2. Select from short list of business terms to minimize misspelling or typing in full
  3. Push "SEMANTIFI " button

For example, if you like to compare EBIT between India and Taiwan for Bankcards Product, follow these simple steps:

  1. Type or select EBIT, India, Taiwan, Bankcards Total
  2. Push "SEMANTIFI" button
  3. SEMANTIFI will present multiple charts and tables based on your request


Is there a syntax or structure to ask a question?

No. SEMANTIFI is envisioned to as simple as web-search where users can ask free-form questions.

How do I interpret data from SEMANTIFI reports?

Not everyone is qualified to interpret business information accurately. There, always verify, verify and verify.


Why does SEMANTIFI show multiple tables and charts?

So many users who are pressed for time can quickly glance at multiple reports and say "I want that report!". SEMANTIFI reporting engine analyses the resulting data to assess the most reasonable ways to present information. SEMANTIFI can present as many as 16 different types of charts or tables.


Can I download the data?

Yes. The link "Download Data" is shown almost all the time with the same summary data that went into creating various presentation-ready charts and tables. "Download Data" will be disabled in some cases based on the level or amount of data.


What format(s) can the data be downloaded?

"Download Data" link opens in Excel as .CSV file. "Build you own report" link opens an Excel Pivot Table and can saved a spreadsheet or .XLS file.


Can I save my queries?

Yes, by clicking "[Save]" at the end of the "Request Feedback". All saved questions appear under "Saved Requests" right below the search bar.


Can I format these images/charts, change colors, etc?

Yes and No. Usually, the first link is a Direct Answer and has multiple presentation-ready charts and tables. These tables and charts are images and cannot be formatted or customized. The links, "Build your own report" and "Download data" offer the underlying data along with charts and pivot tables. These are customizable.


How do I copy these charts/tables to MS Word, Excel or PowerPoint?

All SEMANTIFI prepared charts can be added to any MS Office document by just dragging them from the webpage on to the Word document, Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation.


How do I interpret the query feedback?

The "Request Feedback" is an important yet simple tool for users to know whether his/her question was understood completely or not. When a business term is not understood it is shown in RED, in GREEN when understood and in BLACK when deemed not relevant to the overall meaning of the question.

There can be many reasons why user’s questions may not be understood. Here are some common reasons:

Misspelled: spelling TAIWAN as TAIWAIN will not be understood;

Free-from Search
Ask questions in simple sentence or keywords and leave the arduous tasks of preparing database queries, preparing presentation ready reports to SEMANTIFI .

Auto-Complete
SEMANTIFI has several apps, hundreds of concept names, and thousands of instance names. Auto-Complete allows you to select these terms instead of remembering and tying in full. A short list of terms that match your latest word will appear as you type and a term can be selected using the up-down arrows or the mouse.

Save Queries
Users can questions for future review by clicking on "[Save]" at the end of the Request Feedback. All saved requests will appear as a list under "Saved Requests" under the search bar. Only the question is saved. Clicking a "Saved Requests" will submit the selected question and the latest information will be returned.

Personalization

  • Synonyms
    Users can rename any business term in Semantifi to their own liking. These are personalized and do not affect other users.
  • Create Groups
    Users can create personalized groups of Organizations, Product Lines, Line Items, etc. Creating such groups will allow for short or succinct questions in the search bar. For instance, you can select 5 or 6 Loan products and group them as "MyLoanProducts". Later, you can ask a question like "Jan 2005 EBIT for MyLoanProducts" which is a lot simpler than asking "Jan 2005 EBIT for LoanProduct1, LoanProduct2, LoanProduct3, LoanProduct4, LoanProduct5"
  • Display Properties
    SEMANTIFI allows for users to save personalized display names for all Business Metrics.


Multiple links for Power Users

Users who are pressed for time will appreciate the choice of multiple tables and charts that are presentation ready. These reports can added to Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations by just dragging them from the webpage on to the document. This is usually the first link.

Power Users who like to customize reports further can do so by clicking:
1. "Build you own report" which shows the very familiar Excel Pivot Tables within the web browser and allows you to Slice & Dice multi-dimensional data. Customized reports can be saved as Excel spreadsheets by clicking on "Export to Excel" button from the toolbar above the table.
2. "Download Data" link which brings up Excel within the web browser with raw but summarized data


What is the scope of questions that can be answered using SEMANTIFI ?

Any common practices recommended?

Recommend using Comma's to separate a series of business terms much like writing simple sentences. For example, "companies with year 2008 sales > 2 million".
