Data Source:
The annual level data for manufacturing industry for the period 1958 to 2005 was obtained from http://www.nber.org/data/nbprod2005.html. And the metadata was obtained from http://www.nber.org/nberces/nbprod96.htm. This metadata pertains to SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) and the metadata was interpreted to NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) data set.
Also NAICS 2002 industry codes and classification was obtained from http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/. The 1997 NAICS dataset was matched to 2002 NAICS. This NAICS dataset covers 473 manufacturing industries classified by NAICS code. The data also covers 21 main industries in manufacturing which is termed as primary industry. And since industry codes were changed from SIC to NAICS in 1997, some industry's observations are missing for 1958-1996 or for 1997-2005.
